Family Fraud: One of my specialties is in the growing field of family fraud – the situation in which an adult child, without parents’ knowledge or permission, makes personal (and usually excessive) use of family finances. The consequences can easily escalate and compromise mom and dad’s income, investments, and retirement—often seriously, and sometimes critically. Family fraud is a form of financial elder abuse.
Family fraud typically occurs in family-operated businesses; where one adult child has unmonitored or sole control over parents’ daily finances; and with parents simply uninterested in their financial situation – as long as the lights come on and there is food in the refrigerator, they’re happy.
If one of these sounds familiar, or if you suspect a family member of assuming “entitlement” in spending parents’ money, it is vital to do an internal family audit.
I will investigate your situation and: 1) assess the damage, 2) find a just and equitable solution, 3) determine the need for or responsibility to initiate legal action.
There may be significant damage occurring right now. It’s not an easy topic to bring up to your family, but it may only get worse unless you do something about it now. Taking action is the first step to saving your parents’ (and possibly your own) finances.
Getting Money Back: I love helping clients make money. I will consign, sell, or donate (for the tax write-off) those items I think can bring you a few bucks. You get money back, or credit toward your next appointment, less a small percentage. I have a good eye for what will sell. Clothing is the most common and lucrative collection, but other household items are good candidates as well.
